29 Jewels from Sovereign Grace Conference 2007
Last week God blessed me with the opportunity to spend 5 days under the most amazingly solid and Biblical teaching and preaching. I attended the 24th annual Sovereign Grace Bible Conference at Main Street Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. It was a week full of passion for Jesus Christ, love for the sacred and holy Word of God, and the sweetest fellowship among the saints. I thank God for that refreshment and for the jewels He blessed me with through all the annointed preachers and teachers.
Here are a few of the jewels that really made me spend some time pondering, meditating, and digging into the Scriptures. I hope you are as blessed as I was and that you are encouraged by tidbits from these great minds.
1. God will use your enemies to teach you a think or two--sometimes He'll use them to humble you! Sometimes your worst enemy is yourself.
2. God's work only consists of two things: Wrath and Mercy.
3. God will shake you to the core and drop you to the floor if that's what it takes to sanctify you!
4. We're only able to keep God's commands because God's command is keeping us!
5. God's Word can be summarized in two words: Fear Me!
6. People who attack the Word of God don't have a leg to stand on. Remember the serpent in the garden? He was the first to attack the Word of God when he distorted what God said. Now he's legless! Think about it!
7. Why did God create light before He created the sun? He did so to show us that He is the source of light.
8. You were born blind, in darkness, so depraved you couldn't see your own depravity, under the wrath of God, with a hateful and hostile mind toward God, totally alienated from God, dead, and engaged in wicked deeds! Only God can change a maggot like that into a God-pleaser!
9. Discipleship cannot be divorced from the Gospel.
10. Unregenerate man is willfully ignorant.
11. Only the King of kings can defeat my rebellious spirit.
12. Jesus was prophesied to come as a prophet 'like Moses'. The difference between them is that Moses never built anything...Jesus built everything!
13. All the other prophets point to Jesus. Jesus points to Himself.
14. God administers His grace as He wills. God withholds His grace as He wills.
15. God saving sinners is like giving a car a jump when it doesn't even have a battery.
16. God never has and never will wait on any human to obligate Him to grant them mercy!
17. ***Removed per request.***
18. Barrabas, a murderer given freedom (eventhough we don't know if he was ever saved), is a picture of the sinner given freedom in Christ. Jesus took his place and bore the punishment he was destined to suffer. Barrabas was proven guilty, Jesus was declared not guilty of any sin even as he was tortured and killed. Truly Barrabas was ransomed in an earthly way that day as each of us is ransomed spiritually by that same crosswork of Christ.
19. Home by birth is not home by rebirth. We are elect exiles living in a dark world that is not our own.
20. Get perspective on your mess! This suffering is brought to you by God! Suffering is God's hot iron used to press out the wrinkles in your life!
21. If God isn't sovereign over your pain, then who is?
22. If there was a wilderness for Christ, don't you think there should be one for you?
23. When you are reviled, do not revile in return. Look to Christ who was silent as a lamb before its shearers.
24. The ressurrection declares Jesus to be what He has always been! Conqueror! King! Glorious!
25. God's Word shall prosper in the THING to which it is sent. If you are one of His chosen, then you are the THING!
26. Get over yourself and pray for an ear to hear!
27. God just might use your rebellion to show His glory to a pagan. Look what happened with Jonah.
28. Don't spend your time looking into the sky. Get to work and be busy when He comes!
29. Pentecost is no more repeatable than the crucifixion, the ressurrection, or the ascension. It's not about tongues! The Holy Spirit's work at Pentecost is like a floodlight pointing our attention to the completed crosswork of Christ!
If you didn't make it to conference this year, I hope you will try to be there next year. It's an amazing time of growth in grace and knowledge. The truth of the Bible is preached and the glory of God is proclaimed...more boldly and passionately than I've ever witnessed!
